Alexander Usik is a famous Ukrainian boxer. He was born in the main city of Crimea on January 17, 1987. Among Sasha's childhood hobbies: wrestling, football, dancing. In sport No. 1, he achieved some success - he played as a midfielder in the youth team of Tavria. However, after some time, he realized that this was not his path and decided to part with football. Alexander started boxing relatively late, when he was 15 years old. His first coach was Sergei Lapin. The mentor saw in Sasha’s eyes a great desire to train and took him into his section. Alexander said that from the very beginning of classes he received the maximum load. But this did not stop him, but only provoked him. The guy studied 4 hours a day. Such persistence was not in vain - after some time, results appeared. As a result, of the hundreds of guys who trained with Lapin at that time, only the coach’s son and Alexander continued to train.

The sports path of Alexander Usik

In 2005, Usik won his first competition, held in Budapest. In the same year, the Crimean boxer participated in the European Youth Championship in Tallinn and in the tournament in Debrecen, Hungary (took 2nd place). Alexander performed in the category up to 75 kg. A year later, the first victory in the Ukrainian Championship was won.

Since 2008, Anatoly Lomachenko has become Alexander Usik’s coach. The Crimean's first serious tournament was the Olympic Games held in Beijing. Here our hero did not perform very well - he lost to Clemente Russo from Italy, the future silver medalist. By this time, Usik first moved to the light heavy weight category, and then to the heavy weight category. After unsuccessful Olympic Games, he returned to light heavyweight and won the European Championship, held in Liverpool, England. Then Alexander again moves to the heavyweights and becomes the best in Ukraine (3 times), and also wins several tournaments.

In 2011, Usik will experience the first significant success in his career - victory at the world championship. And the London Olympics became golden for Alexander - in the main battle, the Crimean defeated his old friend, Clemente Russo. At these games, our hero was the captain of the team.

After winning the Games, Alexander decides to start professional career. He joins the Ukrainian Atamans team, which participated in the World Series of Boxing (WSB). Here Alexander performed very successfully. However, this was still only semi-professional boxing.

Professional boxing career of Alexander Usik

Then a significant event occurs in Usik’s career - he turns professional. On November 9, 2013, he made his debut as a pro - on this day he won by knockout over Felipe Romero (Mexico). A month later, the second fight took place - a victory over Epifanio Mendoza (Colombia). In the third and fourth fights, Usik was again successful - Ben Nsafoa (Germany) and Cesar David Krens (Argentina) were defeated.

The following year, on October 4, Usik won his first title as a professional. On this day in Lviv, he knocked out Daniel Brewer (South Africa) and became the interim WBO Inter-Continental champion. And on December 13 of the same year, Alexander faced the most serious test in his career - a fight with Dani Venter (South Africa). In the ninth round, the South African was knocked out. More than 3.5 million television viewers watched this fight.

In the next three fights, success was again on the side of the Crimean boxer. Victories were won over Andrey Knyazev (Russia), Johnny Muller (South Africa) and Pedro Rodriguez (Cuba). And on September 17, 2016, Alexander, having defeated the Pole Krzysztof Glowacki, became the WBO world champion (first heavyweight). 3 months later, our hero defended this title in a fight with Thabiso Mchunu (South Africa). On April 8, Usyk will defend his title for the second time in a fight with Michael Hunter from the USA.

Alexander is the leader of the BoxNation television channel (UK) rating among the most promising boxers on the planet. In the ring, Usik received the nicknames “Cat” and “Wolf” for his boxing style. Our hero’s personal life is also fine. Together with his wife Ekaterina, they are raising two children: daughter Elizaveta and son Kirill.

The future of the Ukrainian heavyweight division - Alexander Usik was born in the city of Simferopol on the Crimean peninsula in 1987 on January 17. Alexander’s first sporting hobby was football, but at the age of 15 he went to boxing training for the first time, where in the ring he felt the power and effectiveness of this sport, which sealed his future fate.

At the Ukrainian championship, Alexander could be noticed by his demeanor, his passion for dancing in childhood formed his own warm-up style, the dancing, smiling boxer turned into a tactful, cold-blooded fighter when he entered the ring.

In 2006, the Ukrainian was included in the national team, in 2008 Anatoly Lomachenko became Usik’s coach - the result was gold at the European Championship, and already in 2011 he won gold at the World Championships in Baku.

In 2012, being the captain of the Ukrainian national team, he became an Olympic champion.

Next was a triumphant series of victories in the semi-professional WSB boxing series; Alexander competed for the Ukrainian Atamans team in a weight slightly exceeding 91 kg. The Ukrainian's opponents outweighed him by 10-15 kg on average, but he confidently defeated all his opponents, most of the victories were early.

The transition to the professional ring occurred in 2013.

Having considered numerous offers from promotion companies in the USA and Great Britain, Alexander still gave preference to K2 Promotions, founded by Vitali and Vladimir Klitschko.

Usyk had his debut fight in November 2013 against multiple Mexican champion Felipe Romero; the fight was stopped in the 5th round; after a series of knockdowns, the Mexican threw in the towel from the corner. A month later, the second fight took place against the Colombian Epifanio Mendoza; in the 4th round, the Ukrainian won by knockout.

In 2014, Alexander met with Ben Nsafoa, David Krens, Daniel Brewer, in a fight with whom he received the WBO interim champion belt, and Dani Venter, all fights ended early in favor of Usik. In 2015, the Ukrainian fought 3 fights, a haunting series of knockouts brought him to 1st place in the WBO rankings in the first heavyweight division.

In September 2016, Alexander had a title fight in the 1st heavyweight division for the WBO world champion belt against the unbeaten Pole Krzysztof Glowacki. The fight lasted all 12 rounds, the Ukrainian’s technical level of training was appreciated by all critics, excellent footwork and a large arsenal of multi-punch combinations, a rarity for such a weight, as well as the result. With his victory, Alexander broke Evander Hollyfield's record, winning the title in his 10th fight.

The boxing evening on April 8 will be remembered for a long time by Ukrainian fans; close friends in the workshop Alexander Gvozdyk, Alexander Usik and Vasily Lomachenko fought three fights one after another.

Usik’s opponent was the undefeated Michael Hunter from the USA. The fight turned out to be intense; Alexander’s technical potential and excellent maneuverability in the ring can be highlighted. Constantly breaking the distance, the Ukrainian did not allow his opponent to carry out successful attacks, at the same time, serial work and multi-hit combinations brought more and more confidence in victory with each round. In the 12th round, the referee opened the scoring for Hunter after a protracted series by Usik, which put a decisive end to this confrontation, resulting in a victory on points by a unanimous decision of the judges of Alexander Alexandrovich Usik.

Mustache VS Hook

From the very beginning, the Ukrainian controlled the course of the fight, regularly “probing” Marco Huck with deuces, while at the same time his opponent showed good resilience, carrying out sharp counterattacks. But still, due to speed and technique, Alexander prevailed more and more with each round. Dirty demeanor in the ring is the only key against a more technical opponent, but in this case the Hooks only showed their weak sides. After several comments, he still continued to strike the back of the head, below the belt, clinch and push. In the championship rounds, Usik noticeably increased the pace, after which the referee stopped the fight, ensuring the Ukrainian boxer reached the semifinals.

The fight took place on January 27, 2018 in Riga. In addition to reaching the final of the World Boxing Series, 2 WBO and WBC titles were at stake

Initially, experts agreed that this would be a chess game between two thinking boxers. And so it happened. The fight turned out to be incredibly interesting, spectacular and intriguing. Throughout the distance, both boxers demonstrated high strong-willed qualities, as well as a competitive level of skill. Mairis exposed the Ukrainian's weaknesses, Usyk seemed confused in some situations and sometimes his amazing footwork simply turned off, but still his advantage was visible even to an inexperienced viewer. As a result, by decision of the judges, Usyk united two titles and received the right to fight in the final of the World Boxing Series.

Usik Gassiev

The date of the fight for Usik Gassiev was set for July 21, 2018; after lengthy negotiations, Moscow, Olimpiyskiy, was designated as the location for the fight. All the heavyweight titles are on the line, as well as the Muhammad Ali Trophy Cup and a $50 million cash prize.

The fight lasted the entire distance, Gassiev’s team relied on the boxer’s power and his knockout blow, Alexander’s team initially presented a surprise when Anatoly Nikolaevich Lomachenko, Vasily Lomachenko’s father and coach, appeared in the Ukrainian’s corner before the fight.

From the first round, everything became obvious in the situation in the ring, the strategy of constant movements and non-stop pressure exposed Murat’s weaknesses, his attacks very rarely reached the target, but still the hardness of the blow and the skills of the puncher created intrigue throughout all 12 rounds.

Alexander Usik showed highest level skill, his boxing style was aimed at restraining the enemy with constant serial work, perhaps he did not deliver many accented blows, but their number and density did not allow the Russian boxer to work.

At the end of the 12th round, the judges unanimously gave the victory to Alexander.

After the fight with Murat Gassiev in 2018, Usik collected all existing awards in the amateur and professional boxing such as: European Champion, World Champion, Olympic Champion, Championship belts: WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO, The Ring, Muhammad Ali Cup

Alexander Usyk - Tony Bellew

The fight took place on November 10, 2019, according to an unpredictable scenario, both for the spectators: Bellew was effective in the first half of the fight and took the main starting rounds. Losing the fight on points, Usik won with a heavy knockout in the 8th round, having carried out several successful multi-punch combinations. After the fight, Bellew highly praised Usik’s skill and said that he would root for him and called on his fans to follow the career of the Ukrainian champion.

Alexander Usik's transition to heavyweight

At the beginning of 2019, Usik announced his move to the super heavy weight category. Carlos Takam (36-5-1) was appointed as his debut opponent, but due to Alexander’s injury, the fight did not take place and the opponent was replaced by unbeaten Dutch boxer Tyrone Spong (14-0), who subsequently failed a doping test.

After several replacements by a rival in the most prestigious weight category became Chazz Witherspoon (38-3), the fight took place on October 12, 2019. Usyk boxed in his usual manner, paying great attention to serial attacks, continuous shifts and tactical tricks with a more massive opponent. The result was a stoppage of the fight in the 7th round and the Ukrainian’s first victory in the heavyweight division.

Amateur career of Alexander Usik

Semi-professional league

The triumph of the Olympics was overshadowed by the death of his father, Alexander Usik Sr., who died of a heart attack without waiting for his son to return after the Olympic Games. Perhaps the death of his father became one of the factors in the continuation of Usik’s career - he no longer saw himself in amateur boxing, to succeed as a professional he had to go to America, and he could not leave his family.
