Weapon Dragon Claw. Large-caliber air rifle Sam Yang Dragon Claw.50 Shooting with an optical sight from the Sam Yang Dragon Claw.50

Large-caliber air rifles are the oldest representatives of mechanical pneumatics, beginning their journey back in 1550. The Royal Danish Museum houses a rifle body with a trigger mechanism, dated by historians to 1603, and its design is so thought out that it is close to perfection. In general, such rifles were very popular until the First World War, but soon after it began they practically disappeared.

The second stage of development of large-caliber smoothbore air rifles was the beginning of 1990, their caliber was approximately .51, and the barrels were made of nickel-plated brass. The speed of a shot from such a weapon increased at that moment from 150 m/s, which was too low even for bird hunting, to 360 m/s - and with this indicator the rifle immediately becomes a serious hunting tool.

Asian rifles also came onto the scene in the 1990s, but although they had the name Large Caliber 44 in their names, the actual barrel diameter was 0.457 inches. There were several varieties of rifles, for example the 9mm Ultra lever-cock, whose mechanism only accepted very short 9mm bullets. Or Career Dragon Slayer .50 cal.

Of course, let's not forget their contribution to the big bore rifle line with their Benjamin Rogue .357 model! But today’s review is about Sam Yang’s Dragon Claw, a .50 caliber air rifle. According to the specifications, its muzzle energy is estimated at 312 J - this will need to be checked with special care.

Appearance Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The Dragon Claw is a 50 caliber air rifle with pre-pumping and single shot mode. It has a sliding breech for loading bullets - an excellent design that allows you to use almost any suitable ammunition. The stock and fore-end are very beautiful shape, made of walnut, and on both sides of the fore-end and pistol grip there are laser-made notches. What can I say, but Asia knows a lot about beautiful woodworking!

The stock wood is of the highest quality and provides an unforgettable level of comfort.

The butt is quite large - intended more for an adult. The handguard is long, narrow with a rectangular profile - it is very comfortable to hold. On the underside of the forend there is a pressure gauge that displays the pressure in the air reservoir. True, it is not entirely clear what exactly numbers it shows - foreign calibration affects it. But it’s easy to monitor the pressure simply by looking at the color of the sectors.

There is a small pressure gauge at the bottom of the forend, so you always know what pressure is in the tank

The metal is shiny, deep black, polished like . The receiver is made of non-ferrous metal, with engraving in a circle. Overall, the Dragon Claw has a premium appearance, looking more like a shotgun than a rifle in profile.

The weight of the rifle is 3.4 kg, i.e. It's fairly lightweight, but that means the recoil will be sensitive. And the manufacturer carefully added a thread to the front of the barrel - as if without this there are few other reasons to arrest you with such a rifle in the city. I’m afraid to even imagine what permits and licenses are needed in our country to officially purchase this rifle

Power Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The rifle has two levels of shot power: move the bolt lever back one click - that’s low shot power, another click further - high.

So, wait... Low power? Who needs it on a large-caliber rifle anyway? Of course, I will test this mode, just to satisfy your curiosity, but... I think it is completely useless here.

In terms of design complexity, these Asian rifles will not cause any unpleasant surprises. They have a fairly simple design of the opening valve, but it is very reliable - it can withstand many operating cycles.

Among the round lead bullets, the only ones I liked to test were the .495 caliber bullets, which are used in most .50 caliber firearms. These are the ones I plan to use in my Dragon Claw to see how they behave, although it will most likely require spending a couple evenings.

The rifle is equipped with a quick plug for filling the air tank and, finally, I can say that the Koreans have kept pace with the rest of the world - the nozzle thread of their adapter fits a standard ⅛-inch socket. This is great luck, because... Previously, in order to charge such a rifle, it was necessary to have a hose with the necessary adapter. In general, I recommend that when purchasing a Dragon Claw (especially if this is your first airgun), you also purchase a Quick-Disconnect male adapter and install it in the rifle tank - this way you will get compatibility with almost all refueling modules.

Oh, and one more thing about air: the rifle uses it up very quickly. I get about four full-power shots or eight low-power shots, and each time the pressure dropped from 200 atm to 100 or even 80. This is, in principle, a good amount for a rifle of this caliber, but be prepared for frequent refueling. And don’t think that a hand pump will help you out - it won’t!

The simpler the better, I thought and decided to test the rifle at the training ground, using only open sights for now. Then I found out that from 50 meters the rifle sends bullets much lower than the aiming point! Yes, so low that I could not combine the point of impact of the bullet and the sight. Well, but now, when mounting the optics, I will adjust the position of the mounts in advance. Taking into account the fact that I changed bullets and power settings along the way, the accuracy of the rifle turned out to be very decent. Of the 25 shots I fired, approximately 21 “landed” in an area the size of a palm, although all of them missed the target.

At the very beginning of the review, I was skeptical about the reduced power mode, but now I understand what it is for. Taking, for example, spherical lead 13 gr. Air Venturi, I was able to get eight good shots off at low power and they all hit exactly where I thought they would. I will definitely try this mode with optics.

In this mode 13 gr. the bullet produces approximately 182 m/s - or about 215 J of muzzle energy - with eight shots. In high power mode, only four out of the total number of shots were good. 13 gr. the bullet produced an average of 195 m/s - approximately 247 J of muzzle energy. Not bad indicators.

The 0.495-inch Hornady spherical bullets did not perform very well: the velocity was only 142 m/s, which suggests that they did not sit tightly in the barrel. Due to its light weight - only 11.8 grams. - the muzzle energy is 120 J. It is clear that the spread ended up being too large - almost 15 cm.

First impressions of the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

The Dragon Claw has a very tight trigger - you need to apply about 3.6 kg of force to it! The recoil is comparable to that of a lightweight .22 Magnum rifle or even a .38 Special.

The rifle can be cocked by pulling back the bolt lever connected to the firing mechanism. While the rifle is new, it is quite stiff and requires a fair amount of skill to choose between low and high power modes.

Let's try to draw intermediate conclusions. The rifle is comfortable, has an excellent power reserve and its price is within reasonable limits. So far I like everything, let's see what shooting with an optical sight will bring us in the future.

Shooting with a telescopic sight from Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50

In the beginning, I had no intention of shooting this rifle with open sights, since it has such a convenient mount for optics on the receiver, but I still tried them out, just for fun. To do this, I didn’t even have to move the target: the excellent power allowed me to shoot from the same distance as if I were using optics - 50 meters. But even with the rear rear sight raised as much as possible, the rifle still sent bullets 15 cm below the aiming point. So it's time to move on to an optical sight.

The AirForce 4-16x50AO scope was used for the test. It should be noted that the Dragon Claw has quite a strong recoil, which not every no-name scope can withstand, so be careful when choosing optics.

In low power mode, with 13 gr bullets. the spread was about 18 cm. With the same bullets, in high power mode, the spread was already about 10 cm.

Yes, at least large caliber rifles and are not famous for good accuracy, but still I cannot note that Dragon Claw, even compared to the others, shows unsatisfactory results. In trying to get to the bottom of this problem, I used a special bore cleaner to make sure nothing was interfering with the bullet, but I still wasn't sure if this was the cause. Therefore, for now, I propose to understand how a bullet is, in principle, loaded into a rifle.

It should be noted that the bullet does not fit tightly into place. When loading the rifle, I simply pushed it into the breech with my finger - quite possibly not deep enough.

Next, of course, I will use a special tool to place the bullets into the breech - as deep as possible. Hopefully this will solve the problem of lack of accuracy. Tests will show. And until I am convinced of the correct charging, I am not going to draw conclusions about which mode is more accurate - high or low power.

I took two types of bullets for the test - lead Air Venturi with a hemispherical head weighing 13 and 14.5 g. This time I very carefully loaded each bullet into the rifle, using a medium-sized Allen key, which, by the way, worked great. I pushed the bullets with special care and until the very end, until they rested against the stopper.

Shooting in low power mode:

Five shots 13 gr. Air Venturi. Spread - 10.6 cm

Five shots of Air Venturi, but now 14.5 gr. Spread - 13 cm.

And here are the results in high power mode from the same 50 meters:

13 gr. bullet and high power - best result in the test! Spread 8.4 cm.

14.5 gr. bullet in high power mode - and again an improvement! Spread 9.5 cm.

Conclusions on the Sam Yang Dragon Claw .50 air rifle

Is Dragon Claw right for you? The answer to this question depends on what you expect from a large bore air rifle. Its differences from the small-caliber gun have the status of cardinal ones and you must take into account absolutely everything to make a decision. Don't think that the Dragon Claw is a "one-size-fits-all" hunting rifle. The best accuracy at a distance of 50 meters in a series of three shots was 8.4 cm - the result is comparable to bullet shooting from hunting smoothbore shotguns 12-16 calibers, but the recoil is like that of a small-caliber rifle.
We did not try to shoot from the Dragon Claw at 100 meters, but from the results obtained it can be assumed that at such distances shooting can only be carried out at a growth target.
